Qi of the
METAL TIGER :: GENG YIN
Year :: 2010/4708

FATE IS THE NATURAL PREDISPOSITION TO RECREATE PREFERENCES AND SOLIDIFY PATTERNS;
 THE EVER-PRESENT OPTION TO OPENLY EXPRESS OUR TRUE NATURE IS FREEDOM. TOGETHER THEY ESTABLISH A NATURALLY DYNAMIC DIMENSION IN WHICH WE ALL FIND OURSELVES.

General Auspices for
Metal Tiger Year :: 2010
The METAL TIGER year is a year of Hesitant Pouncing
.

There will be a great abundance of qi this year. The qi is designed to go forward and be forceful and direct but it will have second thoughts and irregularity too. The Tiger’s normal impulses will be checked by Metal – consideration and thought. Sounds good? Well, it winds up very awkward. Success will come from waiting for the right moment AND being decisive – doable but perhaps not so easy. The qi has a domineering hue but also a willingness to protect and be generous once its in charge. Those who cannot muster or manage the qi potency will be left to live by the moods of new leadership. The Earth Ox calm looks like suppression to the Tiger … revolution is in the air.
Negotiating is out and strength is in. The Metal Tiger’s natural stillness will spring unexpectedly into action and then retreat back to stillness (to lunch on the prey). Hide in Spring; pounce in Fall.
The power of this year’s qi will be inappropriate for small and delicate matters. Alliances will be made but in a haphazard way. Innovation will occur but not without some reluctance. Thought will impede force but if harmony can be established between thought and force nothing will be left undone. Tigers can be trained but remember Roy Horn (of Siegfried and Roy) and don’t get too confident. Try to keep the Metal Tiger’s consideration in front of action and things should go well.
The biggest mistake you can make is to leap into 2010 Spring activity because you have felt held back by the Earth Ox (2009). Don’t do it. Wait! February, March and April qi will not be stable and mishaps, injuries and insults may inhibit you for the remainder of the year. Don’t be a limping deer around a hungry Tiger! When summer begins (May-June) pounce a little, lurch a bit and eat heartily, but let playfulness temper the predatory instincts.
September thru November is when the true Metal Tiger qi becomes available. This refined aspect of Tiger qi is best to direct inward. Get in the tall grass. Close the door. Turn the ferocity on your own ego. Renounce the world (if only for a few days)! Fast! Take a very deep breath and hold it.
If you cannot turn it in then … Think of the one thing you have never had the courage to do and then do it! Open a business or quit your job. Get married or divorced (finally)! Become homeless or become a yogi or an entrepreneur, an insurgent revolutionary or run for public office.
If it turns out to be the biggest mistake of your life … well, you will have ample qi to apologize with in the Rabbit year (2011). Being unemployed, divorced and living in your cousin’s garage chanting mantras all day is very, very Rabbit year.
The Tiger winter will be like a Tiger in its den after eating an entire fatty rear end of a deer. Sleep, rest and wait for the insight that inevitably emerges in a Rabbit year (2011). You may be resting on your laurels or on your rubble.

To understand the system of the 12 Earthly Branches or Chinese Zodiac Animal Astrology we must study the images as a flow of a 12, 60 and 120 year cycle.

Astrology and geomancy are two premier subjects of Asia’s classical mantic arts. Their development in China over the last 2,500 years continues a tradition whose history is incalculable. Many methods of divination/calculation exist in that tradition some are planetary others are simply mathematically cyclical. The system used here and spoken about today is called the Celestial Stems (yin/yang and 5 elements) and Earthly Branches (12 animals)[1] and is not at all exhaustive or precise – it is offered with the hopes that we can continue to take some benefit from this ancient system.

In the traditional Chinese mantic tradition Fate and Freedom alternate. Fate’s most bitter edge is the apparently “un-learnable” lesson – repeated inauspicious conduct. Freedom’s worthless edge is sloth. Most of us spend most of our time in the vagaries in between. It is my sincerest hope that these annual presentations will help to resolve the bitter edges of our Fate and encourage us to use our Freedom to help others (a gesture that arises naturally from Freedom).

In my lifetime I have had the great good fortune to meet extraordinary teachers but have lacked the Fate to become a good student. Today’s presentation, though inspired by the great wisdom traditions of Asia, will be flawed by my dim understanding. I hope my sincerity inspires your tolerance. Thanks.

Liu Min

Sequence: OX (2009) to TIGER (2010)

The Earth Ox (2009) winter is characterized by old and unchallenged traditions. The concern for convention and stability of the Earth Ox now naturally collapses into the fast and impulsive patterns of the Metal Tiger year. The qi speeds up and rises. Tradition gets a sharp blow to the head but it is not fatal. The Earth Ox has a very conventional quality of leadership – regal with broad support, by comparison, the Metal Tiger is a solitary figure ruling by fear - an unspecific patch of wilderness.

To understand the “qi profile” of the Tiger, it is useful to look at the image of the Tiger in Chinese astrology/culture. Remember that the Tiger is only a paradigmatic image for the qi available this year.

The 60 zodiac animals of Chinese astrology are archetypes, that is, they represent the diversity of human characters while also referring to the cyclical transformations of qi that are Time itself. Though the most popular presentations are about the human character it is important to remember these archetypes also characterize the cycles of hours, days, months and years of the traditional Asian lunar calendar.

As archetypes they can be explained in terms of their socially relative qualities making up the complex of human society or as the way in which a splendid infinite universe ornaments itself. Of the twelve main zodiac animals Tigers basically challenge us to find them a place in social relativism but stand out as strong reminders of weakness in such interpretations. Can you accept the anti-social nature of the Tiger as a splendid gem?

TIGER Key Word: POTENT
Native Element: Yang WOOD
Auspicious Direction is NORTH (60 degrees) EAST
Constellations: Tiger (6. Tail [+]), Leopard (7. Basket [+])
Correspondences: 3am – 5am, 1th moon, prunus flower, sapphire
The White Tiger (Metal) is one of the four Chinese heraldic animals of the Chinese compass representing the West (the direction of the sunset and the dead – ancestors).

IMAGE:
Qi-charged the astrological Tiger is courageous, strong-willed, energetic, enthusiastic, unconventional, lucky, honest, imaginative, competitive, dedicated, dignified and generous.
Qi-deplete the astrological Tiger is restless, impulsive, inconsiderate, morose, stubborn, egotistical, rebellious, indecisive, overly sensitive to criticism, prideful and vain
The Tiger’s stripes tell us that they are both ferocious and reclusive, a characteristic which often makes them loners AND leaders alternately. Think of an ambitious general directing battles who disappears into the mountains to become a reclusive yogi only to return with brilliant war strategies. Back AND forth!

The Tiger talked about in Chinese Astrology is the ancestor of the Siberian Tiger that has been nearly hunted to extinction but survives and is protected in some parts of Central Asia and Siberia. When China formed its central government in the Han dynasty (206 BCE–220 CE) the army promised to eradicate the Tiger – supposedly the greatest predator of humans[2] (excepting of course other humans in war). The Han army killed nearly all these half-ton, 12 foot-long, bear-eating top predators in systematic campaigns. Practically disappearing from Asia the Tiger became a spirit invoked by shaman from Korea to Burma; Nepal to Siberia. To this day White (Metal) Tiger magic is the most potent across all East, Central and West Asia. Portraits of great generals and all wrathful deities of Daoism and Buddhism wear a tiger-skin apron or shawl as part of their regalia. Zhang Dao-ling (founder of Tianshi Daoism) and the Second Patriarch of Chan Buddhism are both depicted in the company of a subdued Tiger denoting their easy control of magic and the impulsive energy of the Mind. In East Asia animistic folklore the Chinese character for Tiger (hu) written on a farmhouse door wards off fire, theft and illness.
Chinese and Central Asians call the Tiger the king of all predatory cats.
Famous TIGERS: Marco Polo, Karl Marx, Queen Elizabeth II, Marilyn Monroe, Rudolf Nureyev, Dylan Thomas, Hong Kong, Chogyal Namkhai Norbu, Tom Cruise, Oscar Wilde, Bill Murray, Leonardo Di Caprio, Alanis Morissette and Elisabeth Kubler Ross

The Year of GENG YIN :: 2010
27th year stem/branch designation in the 60 year cycle
Yang METAL TIGER character
(1890 yang, 1950 yin, 2010 yang)
“Tiger Descending the Mountain”

Metal Tigers are demanding, candid and vigorous characters. They are contentious, competitive, aggressive, brooding, sensual and kind. They are generous to temples and to their friends. Incapable of hiding their feelings or thoughts, they blurt things out and then go quiet. These purges feel good but often bring regret later. When young they are erratic and undisciplined self-creating limits and enormous obstructions for themselves. This impulsiveness however matures into noble courage as they age. They are physically strong and more likely to be injured (head and chest) than ill. Their immune system is easily compromised (susceptible to pernicious wind) by moodiness and depression.

Since the Celestial Stem (Geng: yang Metal) of the year has a negative relationship to the Tiger Earthly Branch element (yin Wood) the year is generally inauspicious – contains easy miscalculations, impulsiveness and reversals of fortune.

The secret to making this particular stem/branch combination work is to consider the way Tigers linger in the tall grass before pouncing on their prey – be patient before you lunge. Lunge precisely!

Famous Metal TIGERS: Classical German composer Ludwig van Beethoven, US General and President Dwight Eisenhower, Ho Chi Minh, founder of DPR of Vietnam, Boris Pasternak, Dame Agatha Christie a prolific mystery writer (sold 4 billion novels), H.P. Lovecraft, Tsui Hark Hong Kong film director, Tom Petty, Groucho Marx and Stevie Wonder song-writer/entertainer
In other Metal TIGER years: (1890) The Eiffel Tower was finished, Yosemite Park was established, The Battle at Wounded Knee took place, Sitting Bull is shot, the Ghost Dance cult emerges, Eritrea was colonized, the first “moving picture” show as shown in NYC, tin cans for food preservation are introduced, Vincent Van Gogh shot himself, the Meiji Constitution is established in Japan, US Congress enacts the Sherman Anti-Trust Act, the electric “chair” was first used to execute a criminal, in the Sikkim-Tibet Convention Britain concedes Ching dynasty’s sovereignty over Tibet, the American Women’s Suffrage movement solidified, American Tobacco Company is founded and Ellis Island opened to new immigrants. (1950):  England and Israel recognize the People’s Republic of China, the Great Brinks Robbery, Albert Einstein warns about the development of nuclear weapons, the first VW van is made, Apartheid is made law in South Africa, Ron L. Hubbard publishes “Dianetics” (Scientology), the Korean war begins, PRC invasion of Tibet, the Mattachine Society forms in Los Angeles and Mt Etna erupts in Sicily

World Politics – Metal Tiger year promises to be a very hit and miss year for diplomacy. Tigers do not make (or keep) treaties. Many countries with cumbersome governmental systems will be incapable of responding to the speed of changes occurring in their societies. Attempts at repression will continue. Politicians are likely to listen to military advisors. Tactical aggression will have many different shapes including terrorist targeting. Cruelty is a real possibility. Demagoguery will have a heyday. Think of your pet house cat playing with its disabled bird-prey and losing interest as the bird twitches and suffocates. What a cute kitty! Remember the Korean War? Remember the official Communist invasion of Tibet? It was 1950, 60 years ago – last Metal Tiger year.
On the bright side new and emerging governments might offer new solutions, but I am afraid the aggressive self-interest characteristics of the Metal Tiger year will not play out well in politics.

Business/Finance – The financial picture worldwide is not so good. Financial “recovery” will come in fits and starts with big predators (international corporations and big banks) making the fastest gains. Guilt and a new sort of self-interest may turn some corporations towards charity and green solutions but it will lack planning and sustainability.  Definitely read labels before you buy.
Small businesses that dare to be sustainable will emerge and succeed – local pride, sense of community and environmental protection will be sellable. By August refined ideas/products will be sellable. Entertainment spending will be strong the second half of the year. Competition will be fierce on all fronts.
By August financial possibilities will increase and worries about “down-turns” will be reevaluated. Who knows? Hard work and good products might become the basis of a new economy! The ups and downs of 2010 will have to wait to be evaluated in 2011.

Romance/Relationship/Family – The Metal Tiger is a strict loner. Even when two Tigers mate they become competitors as soon as the deed is done. Passion prevails but the certainty that creates family life is shaky. In a yang Metal Tiger year being unattached is great. Breaking commitments is easy but also often forgiven. Tigers just walk off when they have had their fill. For most signs that is a little harsh. When they call two weeks later, they are truly sorry if they hurt your feelings. Welcome to the rollercoaster of Tiger love.
Tiger parents are dutiful and protective (especially Moms) and if you have one tell her she’s great this year. Her advice is golden. Tiger mothers-in-law well, that’s another story.

Health – The qi of a Tiger is awesome but it lacks strong immunity. Being the King of the Jungle is counter-balanced by a natural vulnerability to the tiniest virus. The Metal Tiger year will be full of Lung infections and all kinds of contagion. A simple flu could turn fatal especially in Spring and Fall months. Being slipshod about your health will be disastrous this year. Allergies will be deadly. An incomplete series of treatments could invoke terrible relapses. Traditionally it is recommended that you not visit hospitals or graves in a Metal Tiger year. If you work with the sick take extra precautions this year. Low-grade infections acquired and untreated in April-May could flare up badly in August. Those who work around wood (carpenters, cabinet makers) take extra precautions (Metal cuts Wood in a particularly dangerous year).
The predatory cats gorge themselves and then fast until they are driven to hunt. Needless to say, this pattern for humans is not healthy. Thoroughness and routine god habits are the keys for maintaining health in 2010. Good Luck!

Spiritual Matters – A Metal Tiger is like a siddha. This means a serious and very personal approach to spiritual matters is auspicious and fruitful this year. The Post-modern, secular Protestant model of the Spiritual Path demands that we be socially responsible … well, Reverend Good Citizen doesn’t work at all in the Metal Tiger year. Leave the kids with the ex-partner and crawl into a cave. Forget sorting out the Sangha’s business and head for the hills.
It is a year in which you may rely on the spirituality inherent in your own heart – no doctrinal bullshit just a direct and extreme approach works. Who knows? You might stay out there in the Rabbit year and, in fact, never come back.
It is the year for true spirit Eagles not religious ducks and pigeons. Forget the doctrinal library – ask yourself “who is reading?” But that may sound mad.

GYALPOS DESCEND

Then you may wish to listen to Tibetan astrologers who are suggesting the Metal Tiger year will be full of deceptive god-like spirits called “gyalpo’s”. These twisted spirits easily take the forms of “realized gurus” and mislead sincere novices. Gyalpos love to appear in the dreams of practitioners of meditation as gurus and give them bogus instructions and sham initiations. Some think this type of spirit (perhaps the ghosts of corrupt royalty and spiritual celebrities) were the cause of the Communist takeover in Tibet in 1950 (Metal Tiger year). Even if you don’t believe in gyalpos they are a good analogy to the kind of spiritual chaos that will appear in 2010.
In the parts of the world where Christians, Jews and Muslims fight over who is most righteous, all hell will break lose and the territory of this feud will expand. Hate-filled disputes over impossible ideals are the favorite spiritual activities of gyalpo, not true prophets or saints. Self-righteousness and spirituality is a call to war in Metal Tiger years. It will be easy to sell the notion that the non-believer should be killed - it is doing them a favor.
Spiritual teacher-student relationships will be visited by gylapos, as “gurus” are very susceptible to gyalpos – positions of power are where gyalpos appear in the cycle of the Metal Tiger. Do not be surprised if your teacher offends you or falls into a behavior that is antithetical to his/her teaching. Be grateful if they just become quiet or reclusive. Make it a dp-it-yourself spiritual year. You will need the strength of great compassion to survive 2010. Do not get tunnel vision; do not shoot the teacher! If you do you will be the gyalpo motel!
Another favorite karmic knot highlighted by gyalpo is orthodoxy. The righteousness principle for the non-Biblical religions is authenticating lineage. Anyone improvising or exaggerating their spiritual lineage will be visited by gyalpos this year. Gyalpos are often enlisted as “protectors” of lineages and 2010 is an excellent opportunity for them to crush offending unorthodox practitioners. Double-check your eclecticism in 2010 or gyalpos may do it for you.

On the Inner Side – Most of us are not heroes. Courage for most of us is something other people have. The Tiger is more daring than courageous because the Tiger’s impulsive conduct does not always include honor. This year daring is available all around. Daring isn’t just about doing things that heroically protect or effect others … sometimes the time comes to find the guts to have an internal revolution! 2010 is a chance to put aside your own patterns of useless self-cherishing and go for the gold! Why not chose to end birth and death!?! Wake UP! Stop all the pretense and convention! Confess your weaknesses and strike hard at the heart of your attachments to False Views and Conflicting Emotions – go for unvarying and irreversible enlightenment! …or … at least Satori!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! – a bleep in the continuity of your delusions.

12 Basic Animal Signs :: Auspices in 2010

The following information compares each of the twelve zodiac archetypes with the one of the 60 that dominates the year. This comparison gives a rough approximation of the auspices for each sign in the year of the Metal TIGER. (A more personal and specific reading is found in the progressions of stars in your Polestar natal chart). Remember that the lunar year begins on the 14th of February 2010. (0) = not particularly good/bad :: (+) = good auspices in some ways :: (++) the best auspices all around ::  (-) = not too bad if you have modest worldly ambitions :: (--) =  bad auspices all around

RAT (0) 1948, 1960, 1972,1984, 1996, 2008 Thorough/Fragmented
Think travel. It can be a good year for travel to a new destination (maybe even emigrate) but at least get away for a vacation. Your natural economy works well this year – no financial risks work out.  Emotions will run high and this will have a negative effect on your already sagging health. Let someone care for you. Choose a new doctor or return to a favorite healer in September. You need help. Be disciplined in health matters. There is likely to be a death in the family.

OX (-) 1949, 1961, 1973,1985, 1997, 2009 Reliable/Insensitive
Since you are slow on the uptake the good auspice of 2009 spills over into Spring. It is an auspicious year for marriage for you and you may expect a child, grandchild or nephew/niece to appear. Unable to play like a Tiger the year will otherwise be boring for you. You will miss most opportunities to advance without even noticing. There is a potential for emotional upheaval and/or accidents (around water) – be cautious. Being out of sorts is dangerous – focus on hobbies or education that will enhance your career.

TIGER (+) 1938, 1950, 1962, 1974, 1986, 1998, 2010 Daring/Selfish
Your progressive and impulsive energy is out of the closet and will reach a peak this year. Sounds good – main thing is not to be excessive. No big investments, no extreme sports, no running on empty and lock the door when you go out. Got it!?  Now here is the hard part, listen to friends and mentors. Keep a lid on your (emotional) reactions. You may see the end of a chronic digestive problem. As I said, it should be a great year! Get out from under the pattern of reckless impulsiveness and you will RULE! Think Captain Kirk! The final frontier – is open space in all directions.

RABBIT (--) 1951, 1963, 1975, 1987, 1999, 2011 Intuitive/Muddled
I hate to be the bearer of bad news. Having said that this is how to use your rabbit-like wiles to escape catastrophe. Don’t squander money or energy. You look like an easy mark for every con artist in town. Choose celibacy for a while. Chew well. Stop looking over the fence (at what might be available). Stay at the job you have. Retreat. Spiritual and religious practices should flourish and deepen. September to January new and old social resources will gather and support you. Love at work is a possibility. You are not a Tiger; in general, wait, next year (2011 Rabbit) you will be a real debutante.

DRAGON (+) 1952, 1964, 1976, 1988, 2000, 2012 Powerful/Aloof
You feel like a Tiger but you are a Dragon. In some ways you are stronger than a Tiger and there is the rub, you could miscalculate the possibilities and be forced to crash land. Take some advise, that is, humor those who love you just a bit. Give the impression you are a team player (husband or wife). Don’t overextend your self; curtail the constant reinvention of yourself. Let a death near you inspire self-reflection. Or forget all this advice and spend a year in a place where your US dollars are still strong. Summer romance could go gaga.

SNAKE (-) 1953, 1965, 1977, 1989, 2001, 2013 Mystical/Weak
It is hard to give ordinary astrological advice to someone who is so uninterested in the “world”. You have been putting on the hero’s mask for several years now pretending to be interested in what everybody else is into. We thank you. We know it’s not your reality. You’re exhausted, but this exhaustion can fuel your irascible desire for Mystery. Tiger year will be a modestly uneventful year for you, so you may as well do a Houdini. Disentangle yourself and head for the cave/monastery/tower. Think alchemy; not chemistry. Your absence will inspire. Stay gone during the Rabbit year too! Deny it if you must, but if you do be prepared for an implosion in the Snake year (2014)!

HORSE (++) 1930, 1942, 1954, 1966, 1978, 1990, 2002 Capable/Dull
You are looking pretty good. Perseverance has recently furthered your progress. This year you pass for a Tiger. Your gullibility could scar the outcome but your energy is finely tuned for this year. You can reinvent yourself. New job (May-August), new home (September-December) and new partner (August-September) are all possible. You have the discipline and judgment that can really harness the year’s volatile energy with team spirit. Everybody loves you, trusts you, so turn the network to good use - delegate. Be Tom Sawyer we will all want to paint your fence. Take a vacation, but not by the sea – no boats or swimming. The key advice here is don’t overdo (overeat).

GOAT (0) 1931, 1943, 1955, 1967, 1979, 1991, 2003 Idealistic/Morbid
This year the outcome is up to you. With a bit of your good judgment and advice from your brilliant mentors and financial advisors you can make this year another gem. Wait for May-June to start any new activity. Reduce expenses or at least get more for your money. Start a serious health regiment like yoga or taiji and be religious about nourishing yourself. Once you are done telling everybody what to do; take a turn and listen. Take a University extension course. Let a little love in (May-September). Use your vigilant tension to protect yourself from accidents and exhaustion.

MONKEY (--) 1932, 1944, 1956, 1968, 1980, 1992, 2004 Dynamic/Unstable
You are a greasy lunch for the Tiger. Your prankster style annoys the Tiger. Being the Tiger alarm system of the jungle has created deep resentments. You are the anti-Tiger. This year will require some hard work and risk-management just to stay up a tree. Your digestive system will become overly sensitive. Your friends and family will seem distant. You may get fired (Spring). Beat the qi deficit and travel to a place where no one knows you, learn their language and make new friends – even marry a foreigner (August-September). Keep expectations low. Take a class that makes no sense – study abroad.

ROOSTER (+) 1933, 1945, 1957, 1969, 1981, 1993, 2005 Intelligent/Proud
In gongfu the rooster is also the precise crane that balances the heavy paw of the Tiger. You have the key to make use of the thoughtless impulsive energy of the Tiger year. To make use of this year will require all your skills and powers of observation and precision. Focus is a key. Exact is key. When chances arise (and they will) strike hard when you have insider knowledge. We know you rule the roost but you can get a bit aloof – so make a bit of a fool of your self if it brings you close to a prize. Get married, get a PhD, become a parent and take some financial risks – you have enough research and you know what you are doing. Stay away from hospitals and funerals.

DOG (+) 1934, 1946, 1958, 1970, 1982, 1994, 2006 Loyal/Belligerent
You never read the fine print. You trust people. If you used Ox year well, you now know what has value. It may not be what you thought. Your new values and the ideas they inspire will make you feel vulnerable, disloyal and put you and your pack in harm’s way but you can take it. You can grow from the hardship you will create by too much barking. Your true master (boss, partner, friends etc.) will find you at the dog pound. Think second chance. Keep an eye on your health and be a compliant patient – be especially thorough in the treatment of respiratory problems. When the turbulence subsides you will be in a better person in a better place.

PIG (+) 1935, 1947, 1959, 1971, 1983, 1995, 2007 Selfless/Indulgent
Your resilience and adaptability make the Tiger year auspicious. Your serious side takes charge. Being less distracted and indulgent this year your financial judgment will improve and be profitable. Fewer but better parties and entertainments provide new resources (August to December). Expect gifts and share them (of course you will). Tell someone you love you want to marry him/her. You may be surprised. Eat well, chew well and lose some weight. Let the pleasure you take in traveling your spiritual Path lead you forward. Completeness is joy – go for it.

[1] It is important to note that the history of the Stems/Branches pre-dates the formation of Han or modern Chinese culture. The Zhou culture that seems to be its progenitor is a common source for what later will divide into Chinese, Indo-Iranian and Tibetan culture and mantic arts.
[2] The Siberian Tiger no long proves a threat to humans – very few deaths from tigers have been reported in Asia over the last 200 years
